What is Harmonya?
Harmonya, or Harmony, is defined by Webster as “the simultaneous combination of tones.” To the UPLB community, however, the word “Harmonya” has taken on a new meaning.
For one thing, Harmonya ended the era of canned music during graduations and plays. In April 2009, Professor Dennis Gupa envisioned a live orchestra playing at the Graduation March for the Centennial Graduation. With Ms. Marie Angelica Dayao, the first conductor of Harmonya, that dream became a reality.
Even after the commencement exercises were over, however, the group decided to continue playing and made their debut under the official name “Harmonya” in Samasining’s September 2009 production, Riders to the Sea.
From then on, Harmonya has accumulated a wealth of experiences, performing their talents at numerous events over the past 15 years. We’re excited to share these stories with you at our 15th Anniversary Concert, Mga Kwentong Kwerdas.
Consisting of students from all the different colleges of UPLB, the group has a unique and rare composition similar to a Comparsa, a variation of a rondalla featuring bowed instruments.
Harmonya UPLB is dedicated to the ardent pursuit of musical excellence and explore all genres of music, from classical to contemporary. The group’s mission is to give back to the community by sharing their God-given talents and, through this, help people appreciate music more deeply. After all, life could be colorless and meaningless without it.
